Are the tiger stripes on your customer’s guttering driving you crazy? You’re not alone! Cleaning these deep, stubborn stains from gutters can be a real challenge for homeowners and professional gutter cleaners in the Alabama area and beyond! But don’t give up just yet, there are several ways to tackle this common problem when washing gutters. In this helpful blog post, our experts in exterior cleaning here at Southeast Softwash will explain what causes tiger stripes on guttering and how you can remove them simply and effectively. No matter how large or small the job is, there are ways to make sure guttering will not only look its best but also remain structurally sound after it has been cleaned. So read on to find out how to keep them in good shape and how to keep your customers coming back for more! First, we will get the mini takeaway before we head into details.
So with the short answer in place, let’s start by finding out how gutter stripes appear so you can understand more easily how to deal with them. How do gutter ‘tiger’ stripes appear? When it comes to house washing and dealing with gutters, you might be familiar with organic growth that needs attention. To take care of this, we use a surfactant solution – but sometimes the rain can leave behind a product known as ‘tiger stripes.’ This is often seen on steeply pitched metal roofs where rainfall quickly jumps over the face of the gutter creating build-up over time. These unsightly streaks appear when water droplets mix with dust, grime, and other organic materials which cling to the surfaces of gutters. The vertical or ‘tiger’ stripes are actually caused by a combination of dirt and rainfall swirling around in gutters over time. As rainwater flows through the gutters, it picks up dirt and dust, which then sticks to the sides of the gutters. So rather than a surfactant gutter cleaning spray or solution, you will need a different type of gutter cleaning chemical to tackle the water damage and effectively remove it. Why use our gutter cleaning solution? With over 5 million residents in Alabama alone according to government statistics, it’s not surprising that many entrepreneurs are considering a career in professional exterior cleaning. Having top quality parts and supplies including the most innovative chemical solutions and cleaning equipment can help set your business apart from your competitors! Our journey began in 1987 with my dad, Lane Yarbrough. He worked in the Atlanta area for several major roofing companies but noticed the asphalt shingles they built would start showing ugly black streaks just a few years later. Dad took matters into his own hands and started experimenting to find a solution. In 1988, he cleaned the roof of our own house with great success. Thankfully, the factory had an on-site chemist who was working on the same issue and gave Dad suggestions for chemicals to try. Since that day, we’ve completed thousands of wash jobs and honed our processes to perfection. Introducing Gutter GuardSo as part of our eight chemical solutions, we’ve got something special we’d like to share with you – Gutter Guard! This amazing product is designed to tackle those unsightly vertical tiger stripes on gutter faces. If you’re a part-time or even a full-time professional gutter cleaner in the industry, we’re sure you know what we’re talking about! Say goodbye to those unsightly lines and hello to a cleaner, sharper look. So we proudly present Gutter Guard – the new star of our chemical lineup! Increase profits every time! We highly recommend offering this service to your clientele! It will add a major “wow” factor and ensure their gutters look amazing after a basic house wash. You might think about adding it to your gold package or as an a la carte option if that’s how your price list works. It’s a really profitable service, with national average pricing of $1-1.50 per linear foot. You can easily figure out the number of linear feet around a house and make a couple of hundred extra dollars per job! How to use Gutter GuardFirst things first, we’re going to walk you through some important steps to follow to avoid any unwanted repainting. But don’t worry, we have a solution to help you avoid messing up the gutters and ensure you get the best results possible. Wet the gutterTo start off, it’s pretty basic. We need to wet the gutter, so make sure you’ve got enough water and a 12-volt pressure wash system set to just water. You can always use your truck and skip using the customer’s water too. Once you’re all set up, we’re going to pre-wet those sections and get ready to give those gutters a good cleaning! Work on small manageable sectionsInstead of tackling the entire gutter at once, work in small sections of 20-30 feet at a time. This will ensure manageable progress and help prevent mistakes, such as accidentally etching the paint. Chemical TipsWhen using Gutter Guard or any exterior gutter cleaner, be sure to keep an eye on its effects and dilute it as needed. While we’re using it at full strength for severe cases, a 50/50 mix is often suitable. However, it’s worth noting that this may not work as well in colder temperatures. If it’s below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, consider waiting until midday when it’s warmer. Apply Gutter GuardTo apply Gutter Guard or any type of gutter cleaning chemical, use a pump-up sprayer or spray bottle to avoid running it through the softwash system. Brick surfaces tend to be more forgiving, so you can be a little more flexible in your approach. If your gutters are made of hardy plank, avoid spraying them directly with cleaning solutions to prevent overspray on the siding.
Using gutter stain removers on brickFor brick gutters, a soft-bristled brush with extendability is key. This will allow you to reach up high and fully contact the gutter without damaging the brick. There are brushes specifically made for this task, such as the “Marks Off Brush,” which fits the face of the gutter perfectly. You can find these brushes at your local hardware store, and many, such as Home Depot, have options with longer handles for added convenience. It is caused by the migration of water through the substrate, which carries dissolved minerals to the surface. These minerals then crystallize and form a white, powdery substance on the surface of the substrate, which can be unsightly and difficult to remove. One product that can be used to effectively remove efflorescence from substrates is Efflo-Go, a chemical solution developed by Southeast Softwash. This product is specifically designed to break down and dissolve the minerals that cause efflorescence, making it easy to remove the substance from the surface of the substrate. To use Efflo-Go to remove efflorescence, you will need to follow a few simple steps:
What are the two types of efflorescence?
Primary Efflorescence
Primary efflorescence is a type of efflorescence that occurs when water and dissolved minerals migrate through a newly constructed substrate. This can occur when water is used to mix and cure concrete, or when moisture is introduced to a substrate through the use of wet curing methods. The water carries the dissolved minerals to the surface of the substrate, where they crystallize and form a white, powdery substance. Primary efflorescence is typically more prevalent in newly constructed substrates and tends to occur within the first few months after the substrate has been built. It is most commonly seen on concrete, brick, and stucco, but can also occur on other types of substrates. Primary efflorescence is generally not considered to be a structural problem and is more of an aesthetic issue. However, it can be unsightly and may need to be removed in order to restore the appearance of the substrate. There are a variety of different products and methods that can be used to remove primary efflorescence, including chemical solutions, pressure washing, and brushing.
Secondary efflorescence
Secondary efflorescence is a type of efflorescence that occurs when water and dissolved minerals migrate through an existing substrate, rather than a newly constructed one. This can be caused by a variety of factors, including leaks, poor drainage, high humidity, or improper sealing of the substrate. Unlike primary efflorescence, which is typically more prevalent in newly constructed substrates, secondary efflorescence can occur at any time and is not limited to new construction. It is most commonly seen on concrete, brick, and stucco, but can also occur on other types of substrates. Like primary efflorescence, secondary efflorescence is generally not considered to be a structural problem and is more of an aesthetic issue. However, it can be unsightly and may need to be removed in order to restore the appearance of the substrate. There are a variety of different products and methods that can be used to remove secondary efflorescence, including chemical solutions, pressure washing, and brushing. It is important to address the underlying cause of secondary efflorescence in order to prevent it from recurring. This may involve fixing leaks, improving drainage, or properly sealing the substrate to prevent moisture from penetrating it.
Is Efflorescence Harmful?
Efflorescence is generally not harmful to humans or animals. The white, powdery substance that forms on the surface of the substrate is made up of crystallized minerals that have been carried to the surface by water. These minerals are typically not toxic and do not pose a health risk. However, efflorescence can be a sign of excess moisture in the substrate, which can lead to other problems. For example, excess moisture can cause the substrate to weaken or deteriorate over time, leading to structural problems. In addition, excess moisture can create an ideal environment for the growth of mold, which can be harmful to humans and animals if inhaled.
8 Tips For Preventing Efflorescence
Does Efflorescence Smell?Efflorescence itself does not have a smell. It is a white, powdery substance that forms on the surface of the substrate when water and dissolved minerals migrate through the substrate and crystallize on the surface. However, the presence of efflorescence may be an indication of excess moisture in the substrate, which can create an environment conducive to the growth of mold. Mold can have a musty or moldy smell, which may be noticeable if the efflorescence is located in a confined space or if the substrate is particularly damp. If you notice a musty or moldy smell in addition to efflorescence, it is a good idea to address the underlying cause of the problem in order to prevent further issues from occurring. This may involve fixing leaks, improving drainage, or properly sealing the substrate to prevent moisture from penetrating it.
Efflorescence Vs White Mold
There are a few key differences between white mold and efflorescence that can help you determine which one you are dealing with. Appearance: White mold tends to have a fuzzy or slimy appearance, while efflorescence is a dry, powdery substance. Location: White mold is usually found on organic materials, such as wood or paper, while efflorescence is typically found on inorganic materials, such as concrete, brick, or stucco. Cause: White mold is caused by the growth of fungi in damp conditions, while efflorescence is caused by the migration of water through the substrate, which carries dissolved minerals to the surface. Removal: White mold can be difficult to remove and may require the use of specialized cleaning products or a professional service. Efflorescence can typically be removed using a variety of different methods, including chemical solutions like Efflo-Go, pressure washing, and brushing. If you are still unsure whether you are dealing with white mold or efflorescence, it is a good idea to consult with a professional. They will be able to examine the substance and provide a more accurate diagnosis.
What are Efflorescence Salts?Efflorescing salts are a type of salt that can cause efflorescence to form on porous building materials. Some common types of efflorescing salts include:
These salts are typically found in the water that is used to mix and cure concrete, or that is present in the soil or groundwater surrounding the building material. When the water migrates through the building material, it carries the dissolved salts with it, which can then crystallize on the surface and form efflorescence.
ConclusionBy following these steps, you can effectively remove efflorescence from a variety of different substrate materials using Efflo-Go from Southeast Softwash. This product is specifically designed to break down and dissolve the minerals that cause efflorescence, making it easy to remove this unsightly substance from the surface of the substrate. In addition to using Efflo-Go to remove efflorescence, there are a few other things you can do to help prevent this problem from occurring in the first place. For example, you can try to minimize the amount of water that comes into contact with the substrate by sealing the surface or installing a waterproof barrier. You can also try to keep the substrate as dry as possible by fixing any leaks or drainage problems that may be contributing to the problem. Overall, Efflo-Go from Southeast Softwash is an effective and convenient way to remove efflorescence from a variety of different substrate materials. By following the steps outlined above, you can easily and effectively remove this unsightly substance and restore the appearance of your substrate.

Stucco has been a popular choice for homeowners whether they’re looking to construct or renovate their houses. It looks attractive and doesn’t cost an arm as the material usually consists of sand, limestone, or concrete. Once the construction or renovation has been done comes the critical part: taking care of its maintenance. Understanding how to clean stucco and the correct methods to wash it without causing harm is essential. So, if you’re looking for the easiest ways to power wash a stucco house, find the methods discussed below. How To Repair Stucco Cracks Before we discuss the best cleaner for stucco or how to clean exterior stucco, inspect the walls and the entire house exterior thoroughly. If there is any crack appearing somewhere, fill that up or contact a professional if that seems deep. Ignoring the cracks can leave space for water to drip inside when raining which can cause mold to grow. Follow any method discussed below that you find suitable as per the condition of the cracks.
Increase the crack’s width to at least 1/4 inch using a cold chisel and hammer to clean the debris or mold stuck inside. The crack’s edges should be chiseled perpendicular to the wall. Back-cut the crack so its base is slightly broader than its top. After that, use a wire brush to remove all the loose dirt from the crack.
Use your hands or a wire brush to remove any crumbly or falling material from the area around the crack. Additionally, keep in mind to get rid of any chalk, grime, or grease that can prevent the repair compound from adhering effectively. Stucco Patch should be combined with water in a bucket, mixing tub, or container. Use a drill-mounted paddle to stir the mixture for a few minutes until it is smooth, consistent, and lump-free
Using a regular caulking gun, You can apply the stucco repair compound along the break. Stucco Patch should be combined with water in a bucket, mixing tub, or container. Use a drill-mounted paddle to stir the mixture for a few minutes until it is smooth, consistent, and lump-free. Spend some time moisturizing the stucco around the crack and fill in the prepared mixture to apply inside the cracks for repair. You can also prepare the Rapid Set Stucco Patch immediately, provided you’ve already prepared the stucco surface. After the repair has been cured for 24 hours, paint it with water-based paint, preferably in the house’s exterior color. How To Clean Exterior Stucco Here we have the step-by-step procedure about how to clean the stucco. No-one likes their stucco to look like this! Ew!
Lets get started!
It’s time to clean the stucco surface thoroughly once you’ve finished checking for cracks and fixing any that you find. Start with a thorough water rinse of the surface, as it is necessary to rinse with water first. Doing this can clean the surface of loose dirt, dust, and debris. It is essential to learn how to wash stucco the right way. Once you’ve rinsed with water, get the materials you’ll need for stucco washing. The materials you need include;
Once you have grabbed all the required stuff, prepare yourself with safety goggles. When you pressure wash stucco, equip yourself with safety measures first.
Now comes the second step, where you must prepare a stucco cleaner. There are a few options that you can choose from depending on your budget and preferences. You can pick any method you find suitable from the given options.
To learn how to clean stucco with bleach, know that mold, mildew, and algae stains can be removed easily using a solution of one gallon of liquid bleach and one gallon of water. Even though it is less successful at getting rid of dirt and grime; however, you can use it if there are mild stains. It can remove mild Stucco stains with a stiff scrub brush, diluted bleach, and water. Start by applying mild pressure to the brush to prevent collapsing or harming the stucco. Being too forceful can harm stucco surfaces since they are porous and sensitive.
Natural mold-killing agent Borax is less harmful than bleach while yet being effective. Hot water, Borax, and dish soap are the components you’ll need for this cleaning solution. Combine Borax, 1-quarter cup of liquid dish soap, and 2 gallons of warm water. Before you begin applying the cleaning solution, thoroughly wet the wall. Ensure the water strikes the wall at a 45 ° angle to avoid damage. Put the cleaning solution in a pump sprayer after dividing your wall into manageable parts. Apply the cleaning solution to the first portion of the wall using the pump sprayer and rinse it off after the required time has passed.
Cleaning stucco with vinegar is also an excellent option for creating an influential homemade power wash stucco. Vinegar is known for its beneficial properties in cleaning grout and mold. Using vinegar and baking soda solution is one of the best homemade stucco cleaners to help power wash stucco without strenuous efforts. Prepare a standard solution neither too thick that is nor too runny to clean stucco if there is efflorescence on your home exterior.
Can you pressure wash stucco safely without any issues with pressure wash? You can complete this task with a pressure washer instead of an ordinary garden hose and an attachment. Cleaning stucco can be a hassle-free process if you follow the correct method. Before you power wash, apply any cleaner (detergent or homemade solution) over the stains with the help of a sponge on the stained stucco. Leave it for 15 to 20 minutes before pressure washing the stucco. Moreover, you can easily remove grime and debris from stucco surfaces using a variety of cleaning agents. The best course of action is to spend money on an outside cleaner that is concentrated and designed exclusively for cleansing the outside of houses. Also, always adhere to the manufacturer’s instructions for correctly mixing concentrated exterior cleaning.
Stucco pressure washing can be the right option for solid stains and mold on stucco but you must use a low pressure around 100psi. Also, the procedure of stucco stain removal must be done so that it doesn’t cause damage to the walls’ interior. Where you find tough stains, brush any robust solution recommended by a professional and leave it to rest for some time. Let it soak for long enough until brushing can remove the stains easily.
After brushing, use a pressure washer stucco to clean the exterior. Stucco cleaning can be easy with the proper equipment and the best quality material. After applying the solution according to the condition of your stucco, rinse it thoroughly as a final step.

However, one issue that can affect the appearance of brick buildings is efflorescence. Efflorescence is a white, powdery deposit that can form on the surface of brick and other masonry materials. It is caused by water dissolving salts present in the brick or mortar, and then depositing them on the surface as the water evaporates. Efflorescence can be unsightly and can also lead to long-term damage if left untreated. In this article, we will discuss the causes of efflorescence and provide tips for removing and preventing it. Causes of EfflorescenceEfflorescence is caused by water that contains dissolved salts, such as sodium chloride and sulfates, coming into contact with brick or other masonry materials. The water can come from a variety of sources, such as:
Removing EfflorescenceIf efflorescence has already formed on the surface of your brick building, there are several methods for removing it. The most common method is to use a solution of Efflo-Go. The acid reacts with the salts in the efflorescence, dissolving them and allowing them to be washed away with a pressure washer. It is important to note that Efflo-Go can be dangerous to use and should be handled with care. Always wear protective gear, such as gloves and goggles, and work in a well-ventilated area. It is also important to test the solution on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire surface. Another method for removing efflorescence is to use a stiff brush and water to scrub the surface. This can be effective for removing surface-level efflorescence, but may not be as effective for efflorescence that has penetrated deeper into the brick. Preventing EfflorescenceThe best way to deal with efflorescence is to prevent it from occurring in the first place. Here are some tips for preventing efflorescence on your brick building:

What is a Surfactant?A surfactant is a “surface acting agent” that weakens the surface tension of water, allowing it to spread out more easily and cover larger surfaces. This is why they are often used to make water “wetter.” Surfactants are made up of two parts, a hydrophilic (water-loving) head and a hydrophobic (water-hating) tail. When added to water, the hydrophilic head is drawn to the water while the hydrophobic tail tries to get away from it by getting closer to the surface, this action helps to loosen dirt and grime on the surface, making it easier to rinse away without scrubbing. Surfactants are used in a variety of cleaning products, such as detergents and soaps, as well as personal care products like shampoos and body washes. They are also used in industrial applications, such as oil and gas production, to help mix oil and water and to help remove dirt and grime from surfaces. Surfactants can also be used to emulsify, or mix, substances that do not normally mix together, such as oil and water. This makes them useful in a wide range of industries, including food, pharmaceuticals, and cosmetics. Another important application of surfactants is in medicine. Some surfactants are used in the treatment of respiratory distress syndrome in newborns, as well as in lung surfactant replacement therapy for adults with lung disease. In summary, surfactants are a versatile class of compounds that have many practical applications. They are used to weaken the surface tension of water, making it more effective at cleaning and removing dirt and grime. They are also used to emulsify and mix substances that do not normally mix together, and in the medical field for the treatment of respiratory disorders.
Why Southeast Softwash surfactant lineup is the economical and efficient surfactant option for cleaning roofs and substrates.Southeast Softwash surfactants are the industry favorite for house washing and roof cleaning detergents. They stick to what you spray them on and rinse clean from windows. 1 gallon of surfactant concentrate makes 15 gallons for your surfactant tank.

You will need a cleaner like Mud May Day to remove red clay stains from concrete. Applying bleach may kill the organic growth on the concrete, and pressure may rinse some surface dirt from the stain away, but deep set in red clay stains in concrete cannot be removed by using bleach. It’s important to use caution when working with cleaning products, and to follow the instructions on the product label. In this article, we will discuss the process of cleaning a driveway, from start to finish, as well as the importance of following the Clean Water Act and safety precautions. Pre-TreatmentBefore beginning the cleaning process, it is important to be aware of your local runoff laws. According to the Clean Water Act, chemicals should not be allowed to leave the property. To avoid any violations, it is important to look into reclaimed systems that capture runoff and put it back into a tank on the property. When pre-treating the driveway, it is important to start with the low spots first. This will help to avoid a massive puddle that would be difficult to fight. It is also important to wear the proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when pre-treating. This includes a respirator and waterproof footwear. Pretreat Chemicals For Cleaning A DrivewayWe like to use a 2-4% mix of sodium hypochlorite (Bleach) Household Bleach (6%) Ratios:
Industrial Grade Bleach (12.5%) Ratios:
Pressure WashingOnce the pre-treatment is complete, it is time to fire up the pressure washer. It is important to use a pressure washer that is at least four gallons per minute. This will help to ensure that the surface cleaner is able to do its job effectively. When using the surface cleaner, it is important to move slowly and evenly across the driveway. This will help to avoid any lines or gouges in the concrete. It is also important to rinse the driveway as you go, as this will help to avoid any dirt settling back into the pores of the concrete. Post-TreatmentOnce the driveway is clean, it is important to post-treat the area. This will help to feather out any lines left from the surface cleaner and make the driveway look more professional. It is also important to check for any rust stains and treat them with a separate chemical, such as Rust Rescue rust remover.
ConclusionCleaning a driveway can be a daunting task, but with the right tools and knowledge it can be done quickly and effectively. It is important to follow the Clean Water Act and wear the proper PPE when pre-treating and pressure washing the driveway. It is also important to move slowly and evenly when using the surface cleaner and to rinse the driveway as you go. Finally, it is important to post-treat the area and check for any rust stains.

AuthorOur story begins in 1987 with my dad Lane Yarbrough. Working in the Atlanta area for several of the major roofing companies, Dad began studying on why the asphalt shingles they built in the factory would start showing the ugly black streaks after a few years. Dad began experimenting with how to clean the roofs and the first successful roof cleaning was our own house in 1988. Fortunately for Dad, the factory had an on site chemist who was also working on this problem and gave Dad a few suggestions on the proper chemicals to start trying. Since that day, we’ve completed thousands of wash jobs and refined our processes to perfection. In the old days, we didn’t call in softwashing, we simply called it “low pressure cleaning”. While the terminology has changed and the equipment has evolved, the benefits have remained. As professional exterior cleaners, we service our clients and restore their properties safely and effectively. This allows us to run a very satisfying and profitable pressure washing washing company. In 2018, the Southeast Softwash leadership team launched our equipment manufacturing division, and since then we’ve grown to be the largest turn-key equipment provider in the world! Southeast Softwash has a rich heritage in the exterior cleaning industry and we are excited to be leading the industry into the future. ArchivesNo Archives Categories |
